The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, today (March 31) attended the 2016 Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum and Exhibition (MIECF) in Macau. He also took the opportunity to visit a local green hotel and the eco-friendly public transportation system to gain a better understanding of environmental work in Macau.
In the morning, Mr Wong and other guests officiated at the opening ceremony of the 2016 MIECF. He also attended the Green Forum where Dr Walter R Stahel from Switzerland gave a keynote speech on the circular economy and sustainable development. This year's MIECF is themed "Green Economy - Opportunities for Waste Management", inviting government officials, policy makers and environmental industry players from various places to share their views and experience on relevant aspects of mutual concern. Mr Wong also exchanged views with Hong Kong exhibitors while he was touring the exhibition.
In addition, Mr Wong met with the Secretary for Transport and Public Works of the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR), Mr Raimundo Arrais do Rosário, to discuss the environmental policies of the two places including combating climate change and waste management. Mr Wong then attended a networking luncheon hosted by the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute.
In the afternoon, Mr Wong visited the Venetian Macao Resort Hotel to learn more about its sustainable development policies and eco-friendly energy saving measures. The hotel won the Gold Award of the 2014 Macau Green Hotel Awards.
Afterwards, Mr Wong went to see the Macau Light Rapid Transit (LRT) System, which is under construction, to learn how the LRT will provide local residents with a convenient, eco-friendly and accessible low carbon public transportation system.
After joining a green dinner hosted by the Macau SAR Government in the evening, Mr Wong will conclude his visit and return to Hong Kong.
