The biennial Green Building Award is jointly organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) and the Professional Green Building Council (PGBC) since 2010 and was inaugurated by the PGBC in 2006. The Award aims to recognise building-related projects and organisations with outstanding performances and contributions towards a sustainable built environment and encourage the wider adoption of sustainable planning, design, construction, management, operation, maintenance, renovation and decommissioning of buildings.

Established by the Environmental Protection Department of the Hong Kong SAR Government, the Recycle Fund aims to promote the recovery and recycling of waste by facilitating the upgrading of the operational capabilities and efficiency of the recycling industry for sustainable development. Under the “Enterprise Support Programme” (ESP), a solicitation theme “Projects from New and Start-up Enterprises” (SUP) aims to support new and start-up enterprises in adopting innovative ideas to facilitate recycling operations. Furthermore, the “Standard Project – $1M” (SP1M) under ESP enables small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to apply for the purchase of equipment from a specified list through a streamlined procedure. This allows applicants to implement the project to upgrade their operational efficiency and enhance their capabilities.

Hydrogen continues to gain traction as an energy carrier of the future, and fuel cells provide the ideal partner technology – using hydrogen fuel to produce on-demand, zero-emission power. However, there are still key challenges to commercializing fuel cells and electrolyzers for clean energy. While countries have pledged net zero by mid-century, scientific evidence informs us that global greenhouse gas emissions and temperature trajectory continue to rise, and almost every region of the world is experiencing unprecedented adverse climate impacts. Transition must happen at all levels from national to local governments, financial markets, the private sector and individuals. At corporate level, climate-related standards and tools are emerging, more responsible companies are setting and validating science-aligned targets and action plans. However, the bigger question is how we can ensure just and systematic transition would take place in the next 20-30 years with adequate financing and without disruption.

Following the latest Policy Address to be issued on 25 Oct 2023, BEC will be hosting a dialogue session for members to exchange views with the Government. This dialogue session aims to share the Government’s latest ideas related to climate and environment, and allows business to raise crucial topics such as sectoral decarbonisation, financing transition, climate-related data disclosure, resilience, and adaptation etc. By gathering diverse perspectives, we hope to foster an in-depth conversation with the Government on transitioning to a net-zero economy that incorporates the expectations of the business sector.
