The Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club is committed towards sustainability by implementing energy conservation, environmental protection and related programs. The relevant measures and plans are briefly summarised below.

Reduce electricity consumption

  • Replacements of existing installations by electronics of higher energy efficiency
  • Replaced traditional light bulbs by energy-efficient and saving light bulbs
  • Switching off air-conditioning, lighting and equipment in office zones not in operation
  • Encourage staff to save energy by smart notices in the office
  • Adopt LED technology and advanced lighting control technology in future office renovation project

Reduce paper consumption

  • Communicate via intranet or internet to save papers
  • Copy and print on both sides of the paper, where appropriate
  • Electronic filing is required whenever possible. Reduce the need to copy and print, do so only when needed

Water conservation

  • Effective Use of Water
  • Introduce a reverse osmosis plant to take in seawater, desalinate it and use it to irrigate the greens

Reuse and Recycle

  • Donation of used sports equipment to charitable organisations for reuse
  • Encourage members to participate in recycling initiatives

Gas Production

  • Introduce natural gas as a partial feedstock replacement for naphtha for gas production since 2006
  • Utilise landfill gas from restored Shuen Wan, NENT and SENT landfills for gas production
  • Develop a heat recovery system at Tai Po Gas Production Plant to recover and use waste heat generated from production processes
  • Commission the first hydrogen extraction pilot project to produce high purity of hydrogen in Hong Kong
  • Explore the use of hydrogen as an alternative source of fuel for public buses
  • Install and expand PV systems at our Tai Po Gas Production Plant

Gas Network

  • Install solar panels at outdoor gas offtake / pigging stations

Customers – Residential Gas Appliances

  • Offer a comprehensive range of modern, eco-friendly and energy efficient appliances
  • Equip all newly sold balanced flue water heaters with a hydro-generator to replace the need for conventional battery cells
  • Implement “Used Gas Appliance Recycling Programme” since 2003 to collect unwanted appliances from customer premises for recycling and metals recovery
  • Achieve at least Grade 2 in the Mandatory Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme (MEELS) in late 2023 for all residential cooking appliances and water heaters

Customers - Commercial & Industrial

  • Supply landfill gas to Nethersole Hospital and North District Hospital as energy for the Combined Heat and Power (CHP) System to utilize waste heat for disinfection, laundry and other purposes, realising the green concept of “turning waste into energy”
  • Supply waste heat from the Tai Po Gas Production Plant to a neighboring food factory

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
  • Established the Campus Carbon Neutrality Committee to plan, develop, implement, monitor and review progress on the Campus Carbon Neutrality roadmap and related energy management initiatives for the University to achieve its aim towards carbon neutrality on the PolyU campus by 2045.
  • Developed a Campus Carbon Neutrality roadmap in which in the short term and medium term, the University targets to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon emissions by 20% to 25% by 2028 and by 50% by 2033 respectively. In the long term, the University targets to achieve Scope 1 and 2 carbon neutrality by 2045.
  • Established the Campus Carbon Neutrality funding scheme to use the campus as a testbed to apply sustainability-related new technology and research solutions to enhance energy saving and reduce carbon emissions.
  • Eco-blocks have been widely adopted in paving roads on and around the campus, and in making concrete and architectural motars for buildings.
  • Electricity consumption information will be collected by smart electric metering systems on a departmental level and specific uses to enable the University to apply big-data analytics for future energy optimisation, fostering an energy-efficient campus and cultivating the culture of energy-conscious behaviours through educational and engagement programmes.
  • Building-integrated photovoltaics applications have been applied on various parts of campus to promote, clean, eco-friendly, and renewable energy.
  • The University has run the GreenCoin initiative on campus since 2019. GreenCoin as a mobile app enables users to earn virtual coins for engaging in sustainability activities including recycling or BYO (Bring Your Own) practices. GreenCoin serves a s a platform to engage the University community to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle.

The Hongkong Electric Co. Ltd
  • Switch from coal to gas for power generation and cease coal-fired power operations by 2035.
  • Actively develop local RE sources and explore opportunities to deploy advanced zero-carbon energy solutions such as
    green hydrogen. On top of our existing 0.8-MW wind turbine, we will commission additional solar power systems to double the installed capacity of photovoltaic (PV) panels. Total installed capacity of our PV panels will be more than 2.3 MW by end 2023. Subject to the Government’s approval, we are also planning to build an offshore wind farm located southwest of Lamma Island, with a capacity of around 150-MW.
  • Offer a Feed-in Tariff (FiT) scheme and Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) as part of our Smart Power Services package for customers to support local development of RE and decarbonization.
  • Participate in the CDP to report the corporate GHG emission inventory. We access and manage climate-related risks and opportunities with reference to local and global best practices, such as recommendations from Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and relevant guidance from HKEX.
